This was about four years ago. I texted Dale to see if he was willing to give up his cookies for lent. At the time he was having two chocolate chip cookies for dessert every night after dinner. He had done it for previous years, but this year his was “grown” so the narrative was a little different. I will share how our text exchange went below…..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Me: Today is the start of Lent, are you giving up anything until Easter?
Dale: No, I’m not giving up anything today but I do know that God gave up his son so that all of us can live an everlasting life. I would be nothing without my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Me: Ok, well I would imagine you guys may cover lent in Bible Study tonight. I’m giving up white rice.
Dale: I love going to Bible Study. I can’t believe that we as people in much need to have Lent which is so out of reach. Why do we have Lent? And what’s the point about lent and with all due respect, I love Easter more than I love Lent but I wouldn’t give up the things that God gave me. I mean, think about it, look at how many homeless people walk on the streets every day, in the cold, no food to eat, their hands shaking, homeless people begging for money, clothes and shoes on their feet. I think it is time we stop celebrating Lent and appreciate the fact that God gave his only begotten son that is what I believe in. I am eternally grateful for what God has done for me and my family that is something I will not forget and you want to give up rice?
Me: Well, yes, I love rice so I can go without it for 40 days to show my appreciation but I certainly can understand your stance. I will look into some volunteer opportunities for you to participate.
As you could imagine, once again, Dale managed to change my entire perspective. He definitely understands the concept of sacrificing, however, he feels helping others would be a better way to honor God. To this day family members will call and tease me by asking me if Dale is giving up anything for Lent.
