Since Dale was young he would pick his finger and toe nails until they’d bleed. No matter how often I trimmed them he would find a way. It was heart breaking. I can barely tolerate a hang nail but he ignored the pain in order to keep up with his impulse.
Fast forward to his early teens we were tagging along with his great grand and grandmother to get their mani/pedis done. Well when I tell you the technicians fell in love with Dale and how friendly he was that when we left he said he’d like Ms. Tina to do his nails.
It was a true lightbulb moment for me, you see, he could really care less about making sure his hands and feet are kept, but what he did care about was the chatter of the salon. So I made him a deal, you stop picking your nails and once a month you get to go to Ms Tina for her to do you nails and feet.
This months trip Ms. Tina wasn’t available, she’s home visiting her family so we tried a new spot all together because Dale was more open to that than to allow one of Ms. Tina’s colleagues help him. My mother took Dale to Ms. Helen and he was pleased once he got over the anxiousness of it not being Tina.
Last week I went to Helen to get my nails done and her and Tiffany, her booth mate, could not stop talking about Dale and wanted to know when he’d be coming back. She told me that Dale told her she was beautiful and she told Dale “yes, I am the beautiful one, Ms. Tiffany is the ugly one.” She went on to say Dale did not like that at all, he said “no, no, no, no she is beautiful too, all woman are beautiful.” Then she started laughing so hard I couldn’t make out what she was saying.
She said “he said every woman is beautiful” then in a whisper tone he added “to somebody.” LMBO!!!

Lovely story. Shows true character and what a true “gentleman” should look like.
